Organic Law “Legally” Defined

The following definitions for “organic law” are taken from Ballantine’s Law Dictionary (3rd edition) and Black’s Law Dictionary:

 


 

(Ballantine’s)

Constitutional law, or at least, law which carries a high degree of authority [St. Louis v. Dorr, 145 Mo 466, 41 SW 1094, 46 SW 976]. The basic law of a state or of a society, such as a mutual benefit society [36 Am J2d Trat O § 9].
 

(Black’s)

The fundamental law, or constitution, of a state or nation, written or unwritten; that law or system of laws or principals which defines and establishes the organization of its government [St. Louis v. Dorr, 145 Mo 466, 46 SW 976, 42 L. R. A. 686, 68 Am. St. Rep. 575].
