Adlai Stevenson Explained the Nature of Patriotism

In a 1952 speech to the American Legion Convention, then-Governor of Illinois Adlai Stevenson stressed how patriotism should not be used as a tool to indiscriminately label others as communists, or as a source for generating an emotional fervor for the warfare state:

Stevenson also went on to say that, “True patriotism, it seems to me, is based on tolerance and a large measure of humility,” & “For it is often easier to fight for principles than to live up to them.”
